Common dryer faults
- No heat (electric) — heating element, high-limit thermostat, or thermal fuse.
- No heat (gas) — igniter, flame sensor, gas valve coil, or thermal fuse.
- Drum won’t turn — broken belt, seized idler pulley, or motor.
- Squealing or chirping — idler pulley or drum support rollers.
- Loud grinding — rear drum bearing.
- Takes two cycles to dry — clogged vent, weak heating element, or restricted lint screen.
- Stops mid-cycle and won’t restart — thermistor, motor relay, or thermal fuse.
- Door won’t latch — door switch or hinge.
Electric and gas — both
Both fuel types are serviced. Gas dryer repair on the major brands (Whirlpool, Maytag, Kenmore, Samsung, LG, GE) follows a similar diagnostic order: confirm gas at the valve, confirm spark or glow at the igniter, then check the flame sensor. Electric is simpler — check the element with a meter and check the thermal protection chain.

Why is my dryer running but not heating?
On an electric dryer it is almost always the heating element, the high-limit thermostat, or a tripped thermal fuse. On a gas dryer it is usually the igniter, the flame sensor, or a gas valve coil. Either diagnosis is a few minutes once the back panel is off.
My dryer is squealing — is that the drum bearing?
Probably the idler pulley or one of the drum support rollers. The bearing on the rear of the drum can also fail and produce a deeper grinding sound. All three are routine swaps; parts ride on the truck.
How long does a typical dryer repair take?
Most repairs — element, igniter, idler pulley, belt, thermal fuse — finish in 45 to 75 minutes once the diagnosis is done. Drum bearing jobs run longer (around 90 minutes) because the drum has to come out.
Is the vent clean-out part of the service?
A short vent rinse and a check for lint blockage at the wall is included on most no-heat or long-dry-time calls. A full vent cleaning all the way to the exterior cap is a separate service if the run is long or accessible only from the roof.
